What this journey achieves

Each school day ends with a record of who was there. This journey follows a day's attendance from the first late arrival to the head of house's read of the year's rates, and shows who does what at each point.

Teachers mark the roll for each class. The front office records arrivals and departures and chases what is missing. A parent explains an absence in the portal, and the office approves the explanation under one of the school's absence codes. A head of house reads the rates for their year.

The steps in order

  1. Students

A student who arrives late signs in at the kiosk. They choose "A student", then "Arriving late" or "Sick", and "Record and print a slip". The kiosk is paired once with "Pair this kiosk" and the school's kiosk credential.

  2. Front office

Where the office records the movement instead, open Arrivals and departures and choose "Record the arrival". Choose the student, the time and the code.

  3. Teacher

Open Attendance, choose the day if it is not today and "Show the day", then open the class's roll.

  4. Teacher

Mark each student with the mark that applies, then choose "Submit the roll". A submitted roll can be corrected, and then offers "Save the corrections".

  5. Front office

Open Unsubmitted rolls to see the classes whose roll nobody has submitted. The school sets how long Kestrel waits before it tells a teacher, under Settings, Roll chase.

  6. Front office

Open Unexplained absences. Each student shows the sessions not explained and the replies waiting. Choose the "Code to use" and "Approve" the replies that are ready, up to the limit the page shows.

  7. Families

A parent opens the child's page in the portal. In the Attendance section each day that can be explained has a button. Give the day, how much of it, and "The reason, in your words", then choose "Send it to the school".

  8. Front office

Open Absences and filter to "Waiting for approval". Choose "Approve" on a row and then "Approve under this code".

Things to watch for

What happens next

Unexplained absences that stay open become a conversation with the family, and a pattern in the rates can be the start of a wellbeing concern. A student sent home from sick bay is covered in the medical event journey.
