What finding things is for
Most work in Kestrel starts with a name. There are three ways to find one: the search on the band, which reaches records and pages from anywhere; the students list, which is the register your school works from; and the person picker, which you meet inside a form when it asks you to choose someone. All three show only what your role may read.
The search on the band
Search is on every console page, so you do not have to go to a list and start again. It looks in the school's students, households, classes and subjects, enquiries and applications, activities and excursions, and the console's own pages. A group of results appears only if your role may read what it contains. Kestrel never tells you that a record exists which you cannot see.
- Press "Find students, classes or pages" on the band, or press Ctrl K, or the command key and K on a Mac.
- Type at least two characters into "Name, address, number or page". Until you do, the box says "Type two characters or more".
- Read the results. They are grouped under headings such as "Students", "Households", "Classes and subjects" and "Pages", and each result shows a small label for what it is. A person shows their photo or initials.
- Press Enter to open the first result, or choose another. A result is an ordinary link, so you can open it in a new tab.
- A name is matched against any name the person has been recorded under, including a former name. The result says which name it matched.
- A number must be typed as it is printed, such as a student number.
- A page is found by its title. Typing the first few letters of "Variations" or "Message templates" takes you straight there, which is the quickest way to reach an area you keep in More.
- If nothing matches, the box says "Nothing matched" with what you typed. Try a shorter part of the name.

The students list
The "Students" area opens on the current students as a register, 25 rows at a time, with the range and the total under it. It is the list an office works from all day.
- Press "Students" on the band.
- Type in the search field at the top of the list. The list narrows as you type.
- Choose who to look among with the buttons labelled "Among": "Students", "Applicants", "Former students" or "Everyone". "Everyone" is where you find a parent or someone else on file.
- For students, narrow the list further with "Year level", "Home group" and "Alerts". Once you choose a year, the home groups offered are the ones in that year.
- Press a name to open the person's page, or the preview control at the end of a row to read it beside the list without leaving.
The search, the group of records and the filters are kept in the page's address. Send the link to a colleague and they see the same list, and pressing back from a record returns you to the list as you left it.

The person picker
Some forms ask you to choose a person, such as a household member or a covering teacher. They do not ask you to know a number. The picker is a button that reads "Choose someone" until a person is chosen.
- Press the button. A list opens with a field that says "Type a name or a number".
- Type a name, or a number exactly as it is printed. Kestrel waits for a short pause in your typing, then searches the school's record.
- Choose the person from the results. Their name appears as a chip on the button.
- To choose someone else, press the button again. To clear the choice, press the button beside the chip, labelled "Remove" and the person's name.
A sentence under the results tells you where the search has got to: what to type, that it is searching, that the search did not work, or that no-one matched what you typed.
A person's page
Each person has one page, whether they are a student, a parent or a member of staff. It opens on "Overview", a card for each part of the record you can read. Along the top are tabs, and the tabs you see are the ones with something you may read.
- Overview
- A short card for each part of the record you can read.
- Identity
- Names, birth details and the other facts that say who the person is.
- Family and contact
- Households, parents and carers, and how to reach them.
- Education
- Enrolment, class and the person's place in the school.
- Health and wellbeing
- Medical and wellbeing records, for the roles that may read them.
- Activities
- The activities the person takes part in.
- Administration
- Administrative details the school keeps about the person.
- A line beside the name is an alert staff must see, such as a medical alert or a court order limiting who may collect the child.
- A section with nothing in it folds to a single line. Press the line to open it.
- The back button above the name returns you to the list you came from.

Settings
What each person can find is decided by the role they hold. An administrator changes a role on the "Roles" page of Settings.
Training notes
Everyone needs this chapter. Plan about ten minutes. Ask each person to find a fictional student by part of a name, open the page, press back, and then reach an area in More by typing its name into the search.
